The box turtle has a special shell that it can close up tight like a box. When it is scared, it pulls its head and legs inside and shuts the shell. This keeps it safe from animals that might want to eat it.
Box turtles move very slowly and like to walk through forests and meadows. They eat berries, mushrooms, worms, and bugs. Box turtles can live for a very long time, sometimes over 100 years!
