Sylvia Mendez is a real-life hero who helped make sure all children could go to the same schools and be friends! When Sylvia was a little girl, she wanted to go to a nice school near her home. But the school told her family she could not attend because she was Mexican-American. Sylvia’s family knew this was very unfair, so they bravely went to a judge to change the rules!
Sylvia and her family won their case, and it changed the law so that all kids could learn together! Because of her family’s bravery, schools became places where children of all backgrounds could play and share! Sylvia grew up to be a wonderful nurse and still tells her story to kids today. She reminds us that every child is special and deserves a great place to learn!
