Clara Barton was a very brave and kind woman who always wanted to help people! When she was just eleven years old, she spent two whole years nursing her older brother back to health after he fell from a barn. Later on, when she grew up, she became a teacher and even started the first free public school in New Jersey so that all kids could have a chance to learn!
During the Civil War, Clara became famous for being a wonderful nurse who went right to the battlefields to care for hurt soldiers! People called her the “Angel of the Battlefield” because she brought medicine, food, and comfort to those who needed it most. After the war was over, she started the American Red Cross, a very important group that still helps people during emergencies today!
