Gerty Cori was a brilliant scientist who loved discovering how our bodies work! She and her husband Carl were a wonderful team who spent many years working together in their science lab. They were super curious about how our bodies turn the food we eat into energy so we can run, play, and grow strong!
After doing lots of careful experiments, Gerty and Carl made a huge discovery! They figured out exactly how our muscles store sugar and change it into energy, a process now known as the “Cori cycle”! In 1947, Gerty became the very first American woman to win a famous prize called the Nobel Prize in science! Her amazing work helped doctors understand how to treat kids and adults who get sick from sugar problems!
