Fremont is a big city on the east side of San Francisco Bay. About 228,000 people live there. The city was created in 1956 when five small towns joined together into one! Fremont is named after John C. Fremont, an explorer who helped California become part of the United States.

Fremont is on the east side of San Francisco Bay, between Oakland to the north and San Jose to the south. Big green hills rise up behind the city, including Mission Peak, which you can see from almost anywhere in town.

The Ohlone people lived in the Fremont area for thousands of years. In the 1700s, Spanish settlers built Mission San Jose nearby. For a long time, the area had five small farming towns: Mission San Jose, Centerville, Niles, Irvington, and Warm Springs. In 1956, these five towns decided to become one big city called Fremont!
