The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the whole world! It stretches across the Golden Gate, the narrow strip of water where San Francisco Bay opens into the Pacific Ocean. The bridge connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County on the other side. Its bright reddish-orange color makes it easy to spot, even when fog is swirling around it.
The bridge is painted a special color called International Orange, which was chosen because it looks beautiful against the blue sky and ocean. It is a suspension bridge, which means it hangs from two huge cables held up by tall towers. The towers rise 746 feet above the water — that is taller than a 60-story building! The main part of the bridge stretches 4,200 feet from one tower to the other.
