Half Moon Bay is a small beach town on the coast of California, about 30 miles south of San Francisco. It sits right next to the Pacific Ocean. About 12,000 people live there. The town is named after the shape of its bay, which curves like a half moon! Half Moon Bay is famous for its beautiful beaches, big waves, and giant pumpkins.
The Ohlone people lived along this coast for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. Spanish explorers came in the late 1700s and built farms and missions nearby. In the 1800s, the town grew as a farming community. People grew artichokes, Brussels sprouts, and flowers. The town was first called “Spanishtown” before it got its current name. Farming is still important in Half Moon Bay today!
- The biggest pumpkins at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival can weigh over 2,000 pounds — that is heavier than a grand piano!
- Mavericks, a surfing spot just north of town, has some of the biggest waves in the world. They can be as tall as a five-story building!
- Half Moon Bay grows so many pumpkins that it is sometimes called the “World Pumpkin Capital.”
- The bay is shaped like a crescent moon, which is how the town got its name.
