Redwood City is a city in California, about halfway between San Francisco and San Jose. About 84,000 people live there. The city got its name from the tall redwood trees that once grew all around the area. Redwood City is the county seat of San Mateo County, which means it is where the county government has its offices. The city has a famous slogan that says its weather is the best!
Downtown Redwood City has shops, restaurants, and a movie theater along Broadway Street. The old San Mateo County Courthouse is a beautiful building with a big glass dome on top. It is now a history museum where you can learn about the area’s past. Redwood City also has a port where big ships come in. There are parks and trails along the bay where you can see birds and enjoy the water.
The Ohlone people lived in the Redwood City area for thousands of years before anyone else arrived. They fished in the bay and gathered food from the land. In the 1800s, people began cutting down the tall redwood trees and sending the wood to San Francisco on boats. Redwood City became an official city in 1867. It was the very first city in San Mateo County!
