Shoreline Park is a big outdoor area in Mountain View, California, right next to San Francisco Bay. It covers 750 acres, which is bigger than 500 football fields! The park has a lake, walking trails, grassy fields, and lots of birds and wildlife. It is a favorite place for families to walk, fly kites, and watch the sunset over the bay.
The park has a 50-acre lake called Shoreline Lake where people can sail small boats and paddle kayaks. There are almost eight miles of trails for walking and biking. You can also visit the Rengstorff House, a beautiful old home built in the 1800s by a farmer named Henry Rengstorff who came all the way from Germany. Burrowing owls, a special kind of small owl that lives in holes in the ground, make their home in the park’s meadows.
The land where Shoreline Park sits today used to be a garbage dump! Starting in the 1960s, trash from nearby cities was brought here and piled up. In the 1980s, the city of Mountain View turned the old dump into a beautiful park. They covered the trash with soil, planted grass and trees, and built trails and a lake. Now it is one of the nicest parks in the area, and you would never guess what is underneath!
- The park was built on top of a landfill, and tiny amounts of methane gas from the old trash still bubble up from the ground.
- Over 30 protected animal species live in the park, including the western burrowing owl.
- The Rengstorff House was built in 1889 and was moved to the park and fixed up so people could visit it.
- You can fly kites in a special kite-flying area near the lake!
