Silicon Valley is a part of California that is famous around the world for technology. It is not actually a single city. It is a nickname for an area that includes many cities in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Cities like Mountain View, San Jose, and Palo Alto are all part of Silicon Valley. Thousands of people work here making computers, phones, apps, and websites that people use every day.
Many of the biggest technology companies in the world have their offices in Silicon Valley. Google has a huge campus called the Googleplex in Mountain View. Apple, the company that makes iPhones and iPads, is in a nearby city called Cupertino. Other well-known companies like Meta, Netflix, and Adobe are here too. New companies called startups are born in Silicon Valley all the time, sometimes starting in someone’s garage!
Long ago, the land that is now Silicon Valley was covered with orchards and farms. People grew apricots, cherries, and plums, and the area was called the Valley of Heart’s Delight. In 1939, two friends named Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard started a technology company in a small garage in Palo Alto. Their company, Hewlett-Packard, helped start the technology revolution. Over time, more and more inventors and engineers moved to the area. Stanford University helped too, by encouraging students to start their own companies.
