Sunnyvale is a city in California, right in the middle of a place called Silicon Valley. About 155,000 people live there. The city got its name because it is so sunny compared to the foggy towns nearby! Before it became a city full of technology companies, Sunnyvale was covered in beautiful orchards where people grew cherries, apricots, and plums.
Downtown Sunnyvale has a fun street called Murphy Avenue with restaurants, shops, and a big sign that says “Historic Murphy Avenue.” Baylands Park is a great place to see birds and go on nature walks near the water. The city also has lots of playgrounds and parks where kids can play, including Las Palmas Park which has a playground and a dog park.
Long ago, the Ohlone people lived in this area. They fished in the creeks and gathered food from the land. In the 1800s, farmers started planting fruit trees, and the whole valley became known as the Valley of Heart’s Delight because of all the beautiful orchards. The town was first called Murphy, but in 1901 it changed its name to Sunnyvale. It became an official city in 1912.
