Birch Tree

Birch trees are easy to spot because they have beautiful white bark that peels off in thin, papery layers! The bark is white because it contains a special substance that reflects sunlight, which actually helps the tree survive in really cold places where most other trees cannot grow. People have used birch bark for thousands of years to make all sorts of things like baskets, canoes, and even paper for writing on. The bark is so amazing that it can even catch fire when it is wet, which makes it a great fire starter for camping.

In the fall, birch leaves turn a bright, sunny yellow that lights up the whole forest. Birch trees have thin, graceful branches and small leaves that flutter and dance in the wind. Many animals love to live near birch trees, including birds and squirrels that make their homes in the branches. Birch trees grow in cool places like Canada, northern Europe, and Russia, and they are one of the first trees to grow back after a forest fire, helping the forest come back to life!
