Elm Tree

Elm trees are tall, beautiful trees that can grow up to 100 feet high and look like giant umbrellas or fancy vases! Their leafy branches spread way out and reach high into the sky, which makes them perfect for giving cool, comfortable shade on hot summer days. Elm trees can live for more than 200 years, and they grow all over the world, from chilly places in the north all the way to warm, tropical countries. Long ago, people used the tough wood from elm trees to make wagon wheels and furniture.

Elm leaves have tiny “teeth” along the edges, like a little saw, and they feel a bit rough when you touch them. Elm trees were once found on almost every city street because they are so pretty and strong, and people loved walking under their shady branches. Their flowers are special because they do not have any petals and are pollinated by the wind instead of bees! Elm trees grow small, round seeds with little wings called samaras that spin and twirl like tiny helicopters when they fall. Many birds and caterpillars make their homes in elm trees, and some of those caterpillars grow up to become beautiful butterflies!
