Daffodil

Daffodils are bright yellow or white flowers that are some of the very first to bloom in the springtime, sometimes even pushing right up through the snow! They have a special shape with a little trumpet in the middle surrounded by a ring of petals, which makes them easy to spot. Daffodils originally come from Europe and have been loved by people for hundreds of years. They are the national flower of Wales, and the Welsh people wear daffodils on a special holiday every March. There are over 13,000 different types of daffodils, and they come in shades of yellow, white, orange, and even pink!

When you see daffodils popping up out of the ground, it is a sure sign that warmer weather is on the way. They grow from bulbs that stay hidden under the soil all winter long, staying safe and snug until spring arrives. Here is a cool fact: deer and squirrels do not like to eat daffodils because the bulbs taste bitter and are not good for animals to eat, so daffodils come back year after year without being bothered. A big group of daffodils growing together is called a “drift,” and some parks plant thousands of them so that entire hillsides turn golden yellow in the spring. Daffodils can live for a very long time, and some have been blooming in the same spot for over 50 years!
