Peas

Peas are tiny, round green vegetables that grow inside long green pods, and they look like little green marbles all lined up in a row! Each pod usually holds about five to eight peas snuggled together inside. Peas are one of the oldest vegetables that people have been eating, and farmers have been growing them for thousands of years. They have a sweet, fresh taste that makes them one of the most popular vegetables for kids to eat. Peas are also packed with protein, which helps your muscles grow big and strong!

Pea plants are amazing climbers that grow on vines with tiny curly “tentacles” called tendrils. These tendrils reach out and grab onto fences, sticks, or anything nearby to help the plant climb up toward the sunshine. Some pea plants can grow taller than a grown-up! Peas love cool weather, so farmers plant them in the spring when it is still a little chilly outside. You can eat peas fresh right out of the pod, frozen, or cooked in soups and stir-fries. There are also special kinds called snow peas and sugar snap peas where you eat the whole pod, not just the peas inside!
