Corpse Flower

The corpse flower is one of the weirdest and most amazing plants in the world! It grows a giant flower that can be taller than a grown-up, sometimes reaching over ten feet high. That makes it one of the tallest flowers on Earth. But instead of smelling sweet like a rose, it has a terrible stinky smell, like rotten meat and old garbage mixed together! The smell gets even stronger at night, and scientists say the flower actually heats itself up to spread the stink even farther. The corpse flower comes from the rainforests of a place called Sumatra in Indonesia.

This super stinky smell is actually a very smart trick. It attracts flies and beetles that love smelly things, and those bugs help the plant make seeds by carrying pollen from one flower to another. The corpse flower only blooms for about one to two days every seven to ten years, so seeing one in real life is incredibly rare and exciting! When a corpse flower blooms at a zoo or garden, thousands of people line up just to get a whiff of its famous stink. The plant spends all those years between blooms growing a huge underground stem called a corm that can weigh as much as a big kid!
