Bluebells are beautiful wildflowers that are shaped like tiny, delicate bells hanging down from a curved green stem. They come in lovely shades of blue and purple, and they almost always grow together in huge groups that can cover the whole forest floor like a magical blue carpet! In England, some bluebell woods are so famous that people travel from far away just to see them. There are so many bluebells in England that almost half of all the bluebells in the entire world grow there!
Bluebells bloom in the springtime, right before the big trees above them grow all their leaves and block out the sunlight. They are very clever because they use that early sunshine to grow fast before the forest gets shady! Bluebells have a sweet, gentle smell that tells all the bees and butterflies that spring has finally arrived. Long ago, people believed that if you heard a bluebell ring, it meant a fairy was nearby. Each bluebell plant can live for a very long time, and some bluebell patches in the forest are hundreds of years old!
