Schools Long Ago

Long ago, many children went to school in a small building called a one-room schoolhouse. All the students, from the little ones to the big ones, learned together in the same room! Instead of using paper and pencils, children used small boards called slates and wrote with white chalk. There were no computers or tablets, but there were lots of books to read and share.

Schools were very different back then. A big wood stove in the middle of the room kept everyone warm on cold winter days. At lunchtime, children opened their metal pails to eat sandwiches and apples brought from home. During recess, they played fun games like tag or rolled wooden hoops with sticks. Even though schools have changed, children have always loved learning and playing with their friends!
