A planet is a very big object in space that travels in a path around a star, like our sun. Planets are round like balls because they are so large that their own pull of gravity makes them that shape.
To be a planet, it must be big enough to clear its path of other things as it goes around the sun. In our solar system, we have eight major planets. Some are made of rock, while others are giant balls of gas and ice!
