Moon phases are the different shapes that the moon appears to have in our night sky. They’re caused by the moon’s orbit around Earth and how much of its surface is lit up by the sun.
As the moon moves around Earth, we see more or less of its lit-up side. This makes the moon look like it’s changing its shape! These different shapes are called “phases” and can include a crescent, half, or full moon.
